Faith in Focus: 7 Reasons to Start a Scripture Writing Routine

When I started creating digital products with the goal to help other women grow in their faith, one of the first things I made were scripture writing plans. It seemed like a simple idea but the value they can bring to your walk with the Lord is incredible.

I have loved writing out scripture for a long time for so many reasons and in this post I would like to share why I think this is such a beautiful rhythm to incorporate in your daily time with the Lord.

One: Forces You to Slow Down

When you’re writing out bible verses, it makes it impossible to skip over words because you have to write each letter individually. This helps you process the verse in a different way because you have time to notice patterns and/or repetition in the verse(s).

Two: Provides You with the Opportunity to Compare Different Versions

I really enjoy reading from the ESV but sometimes it’s nice to look at different versions of scripture because they use synonyms or different phrases that can deepen or bring clarity to the verse you’re writing.

I tend to stick between KJV or NKJV and then NLT or CSB in my comparisons. The first two versions are word for word translations where as the second two are more thought for thought and I know for myself I’ve found using these to compare with the ESV has often led me into deeper study and brought up questions I never thought to ask otherwise.

Three: Helps You Create a Healthy Rhythm of Being in God’s Word Consistently

Scripture writing (especially if you’re following a plan) provides a structured, yet simple way to be in God’s Word every day, helping build discipline in this area of your life.

Four: Helps Strengthen Your Memory and Recall

When you are writing scripture out over and over again it will become easier to remember.

The reasons why you want to remember bible verses are:

  • The Bible tells us we should in Psalm 119:11

  •  It will help us recall them in difficult times or when we or maybe even a friend needs encouragement.

  • These verses will become an active part of our thought life, which will help us walk in truth

Five: Reduces Stress by Bringing Peace

Writing bible verses can be very soothing. It can help calm your mind by focusing your attention on God’s truths instead of getting lost in a sea of worries which can quickly lead to stress and overwhelm.

Six: Draws Your Closer to God

When we take the time to intentionally engage with scripture this creates intimacy with God and His word is what transforms our thoughts, actions and overall attitude.

This practice will also bring us closer to God because when we are writing out passages of the bible it can naturally lead us into prayer either through thanksgiving, confession or asking for more understanding based on what we are writing.

Seven: Creates a Bible Verse Journal

As you write scripture and engage with what you’ve written, over time you will have a record of how God has worked in your life and what He has taught you. You can always go back to what you’ve written to see how God has spoken to you and helped you grow through His word.

Getting started with scripture writing is pretty simple. If you’d like to get going on your own here is simple format you can follow:

  1. Choose a topic you’d like to learn more about (i.e. God’s love) or focus on a specific chapter or book.

  2. You can use a notebook, a journal or lined pages in a binder that is specifically dedicated to writing out scripture

  3. With each verse you choose to write, decide if you want to compare it with other versions (I recommend two others) and write the verse out in those versions as well

  4. Once you’ve written out your verses, spend time reflecting on what you’ve written (ask questions, seek understanding from God or turn the verse into a personal prayer)

I pray that as you implement this discipline in your life your soul is refreshed and your faith is built up in Him! Keep scrolling to check out the FREE writing plan I have for you, as well as other favourites that are available in my shop!
