Defined by God: Receiving Our Identity in Christ

Updated: Nov 21, 2024

We all have a beginning.

We all have a story.

Each of us started as a thought in God’s mind: predestined to exist for but a moment in time here on earth.

Each of us started as a promise in God’s heart: created for a path with a purpose for a season.

In perfect love He formed you in the depths of darkness within your mother’s womb. Intricately knitting you together and weaving the story of your life even before there was breath in your lungs.

My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. - Psalm 139:15-16 ESV

He saw you before you were seen.

He knew you before you were known.

He was holding you before you were held.

He loved you before you were loved.

Each beat of your heart should be a reminder of God’s grace and wonder of the love He has for you, who statistically speaking doesn’t even exist.

And yet here you are.

Fully seen.

Fully known.

Fully held.

Fully loved.

You have a beginning. It started with God.

You have a story. It too started with God.

Yet the flimsy wisdom of this world has done it’s best to break this truth, shatter this great love and move you so far from your beginning that you’ve forgotten who you are.

Let me remind you . . .

Defined by God

Tiny footsteps, pitter-patter on the floor

I hear the creek of an opening door

I see bold eyes peek around the frame

Little one, what is your name?

I reach down and ruffle your hair

You just look up with a blank stare

My heart swells with love and joy

My little girl! My little boy!

You do not understand My heart

And the love it does impart.

You do not see My desires for you

Oh, if only you knew what I knew

I’ve watched you grow and learn

I’ve seen you lose and earn

I know your deepest secrets

And understand your regrets

When you let go, I hold on

When you are weak, I am strong

When you feel lost, I am found

When you feel unloved, love abounds

When you fall, I pick you up

When you are empty, I fill your cup

For I know what you cannot see

I am where you have not been

I know you, for who you are

I see every wound and every scar

And although at times you feel lost

I have given you, the way of the cross

When you are confused and wrought with shame

I know your name

Your name is: Chosen, Holy, Made New,

Child, Son and Daughter too

Your name is: Forgiven, Found, Blessed

With the greatest love, you’ve been dressed

So when you turn and walk down the hall

When you trip instead of fall

Know it was I who carried you through it all

I helped you walk when you wanted to crawl

I am yours and you are Mine

By this world you’re not defined

With much love - Krista
